There have been many studies proving the importance of having the best name in English. The most famous study is from the American economists Levitt and Dubner, authors of the best-selling book Freakonomics. Their extensive studies about the impact of selecting the best name in English showed very interesting results. The right English name was important for success in business and in personal life.
The studies showed that names chosen by rich parents are more likely to be successful economically and socially. However after time, these names are often used by poorer parents, so it is important you have an English name that is relevant to your age. The study also found that names that sounded like they were from black people were less likely to succeed than names for white people.
The English name study uses examples to prove its point such as sending very similar resumes with a job application, but using different names. Those names that sound like those of rich people or white people are 17% more likely to receive a response for a job interview. Similar tests were done for renting a house, which gave the same conclusion. Studies have also shown people are more likely to be successful with getting dates with girls and boys based on the name in English.
I know personally I can often guess what someone will be like based on their name in English. I can often determine their profession/job, social background and often the country they are from. I try not to judge people from their names, but I know of many people living in the west who discriminate based on first names without even meeting someone.
